Leaf toilets, shitty views and yak shit heating!

Namche to mongla
Good morning, washing water please. Yes that’s the daily call we get at wake up time, 6am today. Slept ok so ready to move onwards and upwards. Lots of uphill steps, sunny though so as usual start wrapped up and then strip within 10 minutes to shorts and t shirt. Will I learn?? Just Hagrid and myself in shorts now, hard or nutty!!?? We have a new group member today. Luna joins us. She was born in namche but now lives in America. Neurological nurse. Headed up opposite side of landing strip, no helicopter today. Saw our first Yaks, very furry and kind of graceful? I love them already. Everest in view on walk. Will I ever get tired of the view? Don’t think so!! A monk walks past us, how times change. In his traditional outfit of gold and maroon, but on his mobile phone and has a down coat over the top. Just doesn’t look right somehow! Stopped for lunch in Khumjong after passing through Hillary school. Shame it’s school holidays so no kids, but we can pose for photos by Hillary statue. Feeling poorly again, cheese from pizza yesterday? Damn it!! Got my bubbles out as some children in town, they were unsure of what they were so kind of glared inquisitively. We also stopped at a monastery that has the Yeti scalp on show. Donated as a gift to locals years ago. Looks like a wig to be honest but I can say I’ve seen it now.
Lunch with a view! Potato fields everywhere. Just amazes me every day.
During lunch we spot some monks praying in the fields outside, so lovely to see. Another group walk past us in the restaurant area, they have the moodiest faces!! One girl walks past four times, not a hint of a smile! You’re in the Himalayas, the sun is shining smile love!!! Hagrids comment about one girl was ‘her face is like a horses arse being shagged by a ….. ‘ I’ll not repeat it all but you get the gist! One of my favourite toilets at this lunch stop. A furry toilet seat, really!!! Lol
Using my power monkey solar charger for the first time today. Recommended by a friend, fingers crossed its useful. Forget it’s on my bag and scratch it on walls when I put my bag down. Oops. Hopefully it’ll charge my phone although hardly use it with no reception or wifi.
The groups starting to split into groupings now. Roomy and ex pat, Swiss and Pom, the miyagis, indie and kiwi, gragma, mr bean, Mexican (listens to music most of the time) me and Hagrid kind of flit between people no real walking buddies. We are off the beaten track now so less groups about, (apart from the moody group) quite nice and feels more unique to be us. Long day, 6 hours trekking, feet are going to pong!! Our abode for the evening is rather special! Wooden shack on stilts is one description? Because we are on such a steep hillside. Toilet one is a long drop with leaves to cover up your business, toilet two a ceramic squat that when you flush with water it washes is down the mountain, outside our window. Yes we have a ‘shit’ view out our bedroom window. Lovely!! Up higher now too as 3800 so colder but room does have a duvet to add to our sleeping bag. Or a ‘dooner’ as my roomy calls it! Rooms are very basic, two beds and a couple of nails for hooks. The hallway door slams in the wind as well so we’ll be having a great nights sleep. Ex pat is in a converted cupboard, Harry potter esk! Tiny bed.
As per usual we head to communal area for the evening as it’s the only place that’s heated. Interesting heating fuel, yak shit!! I suppose it’s readily available. With no wifi lots of us play cards, I learn an Aussie game 500. Good fun. Watch the shit get stirred to warm fire, such shit stirrers here. There are two boys sitting with us. We hear that their mother died from jaundice a year ago. So sad, and something you should be able to cure?
It’s so cold now, we all use our hot drinking bottles as hot water bottles in sleeping bags.
The joys of trekking though, when you pee the steam rises up. Lovely!! No running water at this tea house so we all go outside to clean teeth with bottled water, I do love the view of mountains despite the cold, and we all bond outside together.
Just found out the toilet is rather breezy, and has no light so head torch needed. Nice hey. Now lowly mr bean bless him has a nervous croak or a laugh, and whenever someone says anything, funny or not he makes this noise. Roomy and I discuss this and both find it funny, apparently I do a good impression! Everyone has their traits hey!
All in all a fab day and evening in mongla. Roll on tomorrow!
